history
The Verbandsgemeinde Waldsee was established in 1972 as part of the first functional and territorial reform in Rhineland-Palatinate . The municipalities of Altrip and Neuhofen did not belong to any association municipality until 2014 as an association-free municipality .
On September 28, 2010 the state government passed the “First Law on Local and Administrative Reform” with the aim of improving the efficiency, competitiveness and administrative power of local structures. Regarding the municipalities it was determined that they should have at least 12,000 inhabitants (main residence on June 30, 2009), for municipalities not belonging to the association the number of inhabitants was set at 10,000. The so-called voluntary phase ended on June 30, 2012.
In December 2011, the association-free municipality Altrip and the Verbandsgemeinde Waldsee concluded an agreement on the formation of an association municipality after approving resolutions by the Altrip municipal council, the Waldsee municipal council and the Otterstadt and Waldsee municipal councils.
In the "State Law on the Voluntary Formation of the New Association of Waldsee" of November 22, 2013, it was stipulated that the previous community of Waldsee will be dissolved on July 1, 2014 and that a new community will be formed from its local communities of Otterstadt and Waldsee and the formerly independent communities Altrip and Neuhofen becomes. This initially carried the name "Waldsee". The competent state ministry should ultimately determine the name of the new association within a year. The state parliament of Rhineland-Palatinate decided on November 11, 2015 with the votes of the SPD and Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen against the votes of the CDU that the new community will be named "Rheinauen" from January 1, 2016.
The association administration of the new association has its seat in Waldsee. It can also set up an administrative office in Altrip, Neuhofen and Otterstadt.
On the occasion of its voluntary formation, the state granted the new community a one-time, resident-related allocation of 926,300 euros. In addition, the association received an allocation of 700,000 euros and the local congregations a total of 1,900,000 euros.

mayor
Patrick Fassott (SPD) became mayor of the Rheinauen community on September 1, 2019. In the runoff election on June 16, 2019, he prevailed with a share of 58.55% of the vote, after none of the original six applicants had achieved a sufficient majority in the direct election on May 26, 2019. His predecessor and first mayor of the newly formed community, Otto Reiland (CDU), had resigned from his office prematurely on August 31, 2019 for reasons of age, which made the new election necessary.
Coat of arms and flag
Due to the new formation of the Verbandsgemeinde, the Verbandsgemeinderat decided on December 10, 2015 to introduce a new coat of arms and a new flag for the Verbandsgemeinde Rheinauen. Expert recommendations from the Landesarchiv Speyer were taken into account in the design . As the responsible supervisory authority, the Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis approved the introduction on January 1, 2016 with a certificate dated December 22, 2015.
When choosing the color of the flag, all elements of the previous background colors of the local flags were incorporated. The core of the new community coat of arms consists of the coats of arms of the four local communities. The arrangement of the individual coats of arms on the escutcheon is based on the spatial location of the local communities. The introduction of a new coat of arms and a new flag for the Verbandsgemeinde does not affect the validity of the traditional coats of arms and flags of the local communities.
Until the introduction of the new national emblem, the association had the state coat of arms in its official seal.
