The representation is stylized . The coloring is not restricted. It is used with two flukes (plows). A ring (shackle) is lashed to the top of the shaft, through which either a chain or a strong rope can be pulled. If the sponge is missing (cross piece / stick (cross piece made of metal)) below the ring, it is to be reported like all other deviations, as well as another ring opposite on the cross between the anchor shaft and the anchor arms with the flukes as in the coat of arms of Heide in Holstein . It is preferably found in the coats of arms of port cities. He is often emblazoned as lowered when the flunken bow is pointing down. If the anchor is upside down, this must be reported as fallen . Several anchors can also be arranged as a three-pass in the coat of arms .

The anchor is known as an attribute of Saint Clement .

Note: The anchor cross is not formed from the anchor, it only has barbs at the ends of the cross arms.
