The historical core of the state archive is made up of the files of state authorities and municipal administrations of the “ Rhine District” (from 1838: “Palatinate”, from 1937: “ Administrative Region Palatinate ”) which belonged to Bavaria from 1815 to 1945 , including the territories of the Holy Roman Empire and parts of the Donnersberg department, which belonged to France from 1798 to 1814 . With the founding of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, responsibility for the administrative district of Palatinate initially remained. In 1968, the administrative district of Rheinhessen , which was united with it, was added, for which the Hessian State Archives Darmstadt , then the State Main Archives Koblenz , were responsible until the end of the war due to its affiliation with the Grand Duchy of Hesse (until 1918) and the People's State of Hesse (until 1945) .

Today's state archive was set up on January 1, 1817 in Speyer , the seat of the Bavarian district government , as the Royal Bavarian District Archive . Until 1902 the archive was housed in what would later become the State Educational Institute (Ludwigstrasse 13). In 1902 a new purpose-built archive building was moved into on Domplatz, where the central archive of the Evangelical Church of the Palatinate is located today. After being renamed several times (1921–1938: “Bayerisches Staatsarchiv Speyer”, 1938–1974: “Staatsarchiv Speyer”), the name has been “Landesarchiv Speyer” since January 1, 1975.

Due to the increasing lack of space, the State Archives moved into an architecturally striking new building in 1987, which has also housed the Palatinate State Library since 1990 .

The holdings of the State Archives currently comprise around 23,000 meters of archival material , including around 25,000 documents and around 33,000 cards. The oldest piece is a copy of the Weißenburg monastery from the middle of the 9th century. Among the holdings from the epoch of the Holy Roman Empire, the holdings groups A ( Electorate of Palatinate ) and B ( Duchy of Palatinate-Zweibrücken ) as well as the Gatterer apparatus with over 4,000 archive items should be emphasized. This collection, which was purchased by the Lucerne State Archives in 1996 and mainly related to the Palatinate and Rhenish Hesse regions, does not replace the lack of older documents from the period before 1400, which were transferred to the Bavarian Main State Archives in Munich in the 19th century due to the archival centralization that was customary at the time . A source group that is in great demand by genealogists is represented by the more than 400 parish registers of the State Archives (holdings F 6), which can be researched together with the remaining church registers from other archives for the Palatinate and Rhenish Hesse via the church register directory of the State Archives Administration Rhineland-Palatinate. From the 19th / 20th From the 19th century, the files of the government of the Palatinate belong to the most important holdings, from the time of National Socialism the files of the secret state police station Neustadt (holdings H 90 and H 91 with over 12,000 files and over 60,000 index cards) and the documents on the denazification of the Palatinate (holdings R 18 with approx. 60,000 files). The Gienanth company archive and the Bassermann-Jordan family archive are important holdings in the field of business .
