Grave of Ernst Neger in the main cemetery in Mainz

Ernst Hugo Neger (born January 14, 1909 in Mainz ; † January 15, 1989 there ) was a German master roofer and singer .

Life

Ernst Neger grew up in a middle-class family and initially learned the profession of roofer; In addition, he appeared as a singer and interpreter of sociable songs in Mainz pubs as early as the 1930s. There he made a name for himself and was finally discovered by Shrovetide. In 1952 he interpreted the " Heile, heile Gänsje " by Martin Mundo and became the star of the Mainz Carnival . For these performances in the post-war period , two stanzas were added:

If I were the Lord God one day, then I would only know one thing:
I would take my arm 'smashed' Meenz into my arms.
And caress it very gently and gently and say '"Just be patient!
I build you aries quickly! Yes, it wasn't your fault.
I'll make you arid wunnerschee,
you can , you can't go wrong ... Heile, Heile, Gänsje ... “

When I look at my Meenz, then I think in my mind:
Mer did it with Meenz exactly as with the city of Berlin.
It was destroyed, it was divided in two. And yet I have the courage
to believe that it heals everything. After all, aries will be good.
Meenz and Berlin, you are so beautiful.
You can, you can't go wrong ... Heal, heal, goose ...

With the television carnival that began in 1955, Neger also made it into the new medium. Together with his counterpart, the blind composer Toni Hämmerle , he was the “train number” of the TV Carnival for years. The first performance of “ Humba Täterä ” in 1964 alone led to the broadcast being overdrawn for an hour because the audience could not calm down.

In memory of Toni Hämmerle, Neger founded a pony farm with riding hall in Ahlen in Westphalia in 1970 , the Toni Hämmerle pony station, a place to promote the health of physically handicapped children , which he also supported financially with his fees. Ernst Neger died one day after his 80th birthday after a long illness in a Mainz hospital. Even after his death, Neger enjoys a legendary reputation in the Mainz Carnival. The songs he interpreted became known nationwide and are still played today on TV Carnival.

Neger was involved in the Mainz Prinzengarde as Colonel General and Vice President as well as at the meetings of the Mainz Carneval Association .

In 2006, a CD compiled by Hans Schaffner was released under the title "Ernst Neger: His great successes", on which all the great hits and many well-known titles are included.

Ernst Neger's grandson Thomas Neger continues the family's roofing and carnival tradition. He was best known in 2010 with the carnival song Im Schatten des Doms , which was voted first among the Mainz fast-night hits in an Internet voting by SWR in 2012. Thomas Neger has been a member of the Mainz city council for the CDU since 2009.

The logo , which was introduced in the 1950s by Neger's company, Ernst Neger GmbH, and then also used by his grandson's company, Thomas Neger Metallsysteme und -bedachungen GmbH, has been controversial since the end of 2013. Based on her last name, it shows a stylized craftsman with plump lips and large earrings above a triangle that could represent a roof, but also a skirt. Critics consider it racist, while Thomas Neger describes the accusation as "total nonsense".

Remarks

  1. The text "[...] divided it in two." Refers to the separation of the Mainz districts of Amöneburg, Kastel and Kostheim on the right bank of the Rhine from the Mainz urban area through the division of Germany into zones of occupation. Mainz was added to the French zone of occupation, the aforementioned districts to the American zone of occupation and thus administratively to the city of Wiesbaden.
