Oliver Hassencamp

Oliver Hassencamp (born May 10, 1921 in Rastatt ; † March 31, 1988 in Waging am See ) was a German cabaret artist , actor, and writer of young adult books and novels . His series of books for young people, Burg Schreckenstein, was particularly successful .

Life

Oliver Hassencamp attended the Schloss Salem boarding school until he graduated from high school . His talent was already evident in school. He staged plays he wrote himself , wrote poetry and founded a successful jazz band, King Oliver's Rhythm Band , and played the saxophone , clarinet and accordion . At the beginning of the Second World War , he was drafted at the age of 18 and seriously wounded in Russia .

In 1945 he began to study in Munich , then took acting lessons, got small roles in the Munich Kammerspiele and became assistant director to Erich Engel . Due to his talent for interpreting satirical texts, he became a member of the ensemble of the cabaret Die Schaubude . Together with the director Trude Kolman and Erich Kästner , he founded the political cabaret Die Kleine Freiheit in 1950 . In 1956 he was one of the founding members of the Munich laughing and shooting society . The name arose from his idea as a paragraph on guard and lock society .

After working for television and cinema productions, Hassencamp decided to just write, although he continued to appear as a film actor in a few small comedic roles. In 1959 his first novel, Confessions of a Furnished Gentleman , was published, a bestseller that was also made into a film. Novels, scripts, plays, documentaries and the libretto for an opera followed . His books for young people about the boarding school at Burg Schreckenstein were particularly successful . A total of 27 volumes were published, translated into English, Chinese, Thai, Dutch and Spanish.

Hassencamp suffered from walking difficulties due to a war injury, which made him a passionate cyclist. Accordingly, he also wrote screenplays for television films about the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France .

Since 1967 he was married to the author and director Eva Hassencamp , who died in 2012, and lived in Munich and in Chiemgau . He died in a traffic accident through no fault of his own near Waging am See in 1988 at the age of 66. His wife survived seriously injured.
