Conchita and the Engineer is a German-Brazilian adventure film set in the Amazon region from 1954 with Robert Freitag in the leading role. The story is based on the novel Conchita by Franz Taut .

action

The German engineer Thomas is brought to Amazonia , in the middle of the Brazilian jungle, by a large oil company . Little does he know how difficult he is when he starts his job. There is fierce competition on site between the various oil production companies, which is being fought with tough conditions. For example, a rival company tries to convince the workers of Thomas' company to go on strike; a maneuver that Thomas can thwart with some skill and persuasiveness. After getting people back to work, returns are increased even further.

The neighboring Indian people are also revolting against the oil drills and causing unrest. An indigenous girl, the mestizine Conchita, falls in love with the fair-skinned engineer, which leads to further problems, because Thomas is engaged to the blond compatriot Irene, who arrives in the Amazon region at this point in time. Then the Indio people, who were stirred up by the competition, attack the extraction sites, and the hot-blooded Conchita, gripped by intense jealousy, infects the oil wells due to Irene's arrival. Conchita finally seeks death in the blazing fire, while Thomas succeeds in preventing a fatal explosion of the oil store by means of a targeted detonation.

Conchita und der Ingenieur was shot from spring 1954 on Brazilian locations (oil field Nova Olinda in the Amazon region, oil fields in the state of Bahia, surroundings of Rio de Janeiro) and in the film studios of Geiselgasteig near Munich. The film premiered on September 24, 1954 in Cologne; the Berlin premiere was on October 5, 1954.

Oskar A. Bayer and Erwin Gitt took over the production management. Alan Withy and Fritz Lück designed the film structures.

Leading actress Vanja Orico (1931–2015) became internationally known in 1953 through Lima Barreto's adventure film O Cangaceiro - The Lawless . Immediately after Conchita und der Ingenieur , in December 1954, Carioca stood in front of the camera for another German production: the GDR film Die Windrose .

A native version of the film called Paixão nas Selvas (Passion in the Jungle) was produced in Brazilian Portuguese, in which the Brazilian actor Cyll Farney (1925-2003) took over the role of Friday. This version was shown in Brazilian cinemas in 1955.
