Irmgard Seefried
Irmgard Seefried (born October 9, 1919 in Köngetried near Mindelheim ; † November 24, 1988 in Vienna ) was a German lyrical soprano who enjoyed world fame both as an opera and as a lied singer . She was married to the Austrian violinist Wolfgang Schneiderhan , with whom she played many song and concert evenings.
Life
Irmgard Seefried studied in Augsburg at the Leopold Mozart Conservatory there (today: Leopold Mozart Center ) and in Munich. In 1940 Herbert von Karajan brought her to Aachen , where she made her debut as a temple singer in Verdi's Aida . In 1943 she went to Vienna and immediately sang Eva in Richard Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at the State Opera under Karl Böhm . At Richard Strauss' request, she took on the role of composer in Ariadne auf Naxos in 1944 on his 80th birthday . Irmgard Seefried remained a member of the ensemble of the Vienna State Opera for the rest of her life. Since 1946 she has sung regularly on all the major stages and at all major festivals in the world, often under the direction of Herbert von Karajan ( Die Zauberflöte 1950, with Anton Dermota as Tamino), but also with Wilhelm Furtwängler (Die Zauberflöte 1951), Bruno Walter ( 4th Mahler Symphony ), Karl Böhm ( The Creation ), Ferenc Fricsay ( Fidelio ) a. v. a. m.
In 1953 she received the Lilli Lehmann Medal and the Mozart Medal of the Mozart Community of Vienna from the International Mozarteum Foundation "in recognition of her artistic participation in Mozart's C minor Mass" .
Seefried was an important member of the "golden generation" of soprano singing ( Schwarzkopf , Grümmer , Güden , Stader , della Casa , Nilsson , Mödl , Varnay ), to whom she lived up to with her bright and clear sound emission and her clear, but not overemphasized, diction . She rests in an honorary grave in the Neustift cemetery (group 22, row 5, number 5) in Vienna, next to her husband.
Irmgard Seefried is the mother of the actress Mona Seefried .
