Freddy Breck , actually Gerhard Breker , (born January 21, 1942 in Sonneberg , Thuringia ; † December 17, 2008 in Rottach-Egern , Upper Bavaria ) was a German pop singer , composer , producer and presenter .
Life
Growing up in Hagen , Breck first studied mechanical engineering. Then he was discovered by Heinz Gietz as a singer. He produced hits with him that were based on well-known classical melodies. His first success was all over the world after the famous " prisoner's choir " from Nabucco by Giuseppe Verdi . The title earned Breck the first gold record and sold over 650,000 copies. Numerous other successes followed, with which he appeared in several television programs. Best known are the two hits Bianca and Rote Rosen (both 1973). In Germany, Rote Rosen also received a gold record for 500,000 copies sold. Breck's plates appeared a. a. in Japan, Brazil, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada, Scandinavia, Portugal, Spain, Italy, France, Benelux, Great Britain. With We believe in tomorrow , the English version of All over the world , he was represented in South African charts for 25 weeks in 1973.
In 1974 Breck released the single So In Love With You in Great Britain , which landed at number 44 on the charts and remained his only success there. Breck, however, was able to record great sales successes in the Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark. In 1977 he had his last hit in the charts in Germany: Die Sterne are gut ; this was followed by only a few successes in the airplay hit lists. In the 1980s he devoted himself more to composing. He wrote for the Original Naabtal Duo , the Kastelruther Spatzen and Nina & Mike , among others . In addition, he worked as a moderator for various radio companies.
In the 1990s he was again increasingly active as a singer. In 1998 he and his wife Astrid, with whom he had been married since 1989, founded the company Sun Day Records as their own label and from 1999 the couple sang as a duo "Astrid & Freddy Breck".
Freddy Breck died of lung cancer in December 2008 at the age of 66 in his house on Tegernsee and was buried in the new community cemetery in Rottach-Egern.
Honors
During his lifetime, Freddy Breck received 35 gold records , five platinum records, the golden lion , the golden camera , golden barrel organs, the Hermann Löns medal , 2 × the "Stier der Hohensalzburg" ("World Award of Human Heart") in Gold and the Eurostar in gold.
