Leopold Wagner (born December 4, 1927 in Klagenfurt , Carinthia ; † September 26, 2008 there ) was an Austrian politician of the Social Democratic Party of Austria . From 1974 to 1988 he was governor of Carinthia.

Wagner attended elementary school from 1934 to 1938 and then until 1942 the secondary school in Klagenfurt. Wagner later openly confessed to his past as a "high-level member" of the Hitler Youth. After he graduated from the teacher training institute from 1942 to 1944 and 1946/47 and in 1953 passed the specialist examinations for the Hauptschullehreramt in German, geography and history, he was a teacher at various schools in Klagenfurt.

Politically, he was state party secretary of the SPÖ Carinthia from 1965 to 1973, in addition he was president and board member of the ASKÖ as well as managing regional chairman and board member of the ARBÖ . From 1970 Wagner was a member of the Carinthian provincial government, from 1973 to 1974 deputy governor, and finally as of April 19, 1974 governor of Carinthia. Under his leadership, the SPÖ consistently achieved election results in the state elections in 1975, 1979 and 1984 with more than 50 percent of the votes; his party achieved the best result in 1979 with 53.6 percent of the votes cast. In addition, the SPÖ was able to record a large increase in membership during Wagner's tenure.

On October 6, 1987, Leopold Wagner was shot by a former school colleague, the secondary school teacher Franz Rieser , in the toilet of the Klagenfurt restaurant “Volkskeller” (later “ Hirter's Embassy”) because he had felt ignored when a position was filled. Wagner survived the attack, seriously injured. He only remained in politics for a short time and soon withdrew from it. On September 27, 1988 he handed over the office of governor to Peter Ambrozy .
