Franz Rieser (born February 28, 1927 , † March 18, 2007 in Ferlach , Carinthia ) was an Austrian teacher. In autumn 1987 he carried out an assassination attempt on the Carinthian Governor Leopold Wagner .

On October 6, 1987, Rieser shot his former school colleague Leopold Wagner in the toilet of the Klagenfurt Volkskeller (later “ Hirter's Embassy”) with two shots, seriously injuring him. The reason for the assassination attempt was that Rieser felt ignored when a position was occupied. Wagner survived the assassination seriously injured, but later withdrew from politics.

The shots came after Rieser confronted Wagner about the alleged bypass and threatened Wagner with a weapon that he wanted to snatch from him. Rieser fired twice and seriously injured the governor.

In the later trial before the Klagenfurt Regional Court , he was acquitted of the charge of attempted murder and, after a second trial in Innsbruck, was found guilty of deliberate, serious bodily harm and sentenced to three years in prison. Rieser was released from prison after 34 months. After his release, Rieser ran an art gallery for a few years and lived withdrawn from the public.

Rieser died in March 2007 at the age of 80 after a long illness. He was buried in Kappel an der Drau .
