First World War and Carinthian defensive battle

In the First World War he was deployed on the Russian, French and Italian fronts and rose to lieutenant colonel . Among other things, he was there when the Little Pal was stormed .

After the defensive battle, Hülgerth was initially only used as a battalion commander in Burgenland. It was not until 1923 that he was promoted to colonel and regimental commander , from May 12, 1923 to June 21, 1923 of the Burgenland-Lower Austrian infantry regiment Carl Herzog von Lothringen No. 13 of the federal army and from June 21, 1923 to December 31, 1924 of the Lower Austrian infantry regiment General der Infantry Carl Vaugoin No. 5 . He then worked as a training officer in the Ministry of Defense. In 1927 he retired as major general, and in 1934 received the rank of lieutenant field marshal .

Political career

Ludwig Hülgerth went into politics after his military career. For the home block he became list leader in Carinthia in 1930. In the corporate state he was Governor of Carinthia from March 7, 1934 to November 3, 1936 . In 1936 he became head of the Front Militia of the Fatherland Front , the only legal paramilitary association. From November 3, 1936, Hülgerth was Vice Chancellor in the Schuschnigg III government and in this position also belonged to the Schuschnigg IV government , which was in office from February 16 to March 11, 1938.
