Life
Christof Zernatto is the great-nephew of the politician Guido Zernatto . He attended elementary school in Treffen near Villach and the humanistic high school in Klagenfurt , where he graduated from high school in 1967. This was followed by studying law at the University of Graz with a doctorate to become a Dr. iur. in 1973.
Returning to Carinthia , he spent his year of legal practice here at the Klagenfurt District and Regional Court. Two years followed with a tax advisor in Salzburg and a food company in Germany, after which Christof Zernatto became an assistant in marketing and sales at Granini in Bielefeld . In 1976 he returned to Villach, where he was Marketing and Sales Manager at Pomona until 1989 - a jam factory founded by his grandfather. In 1989 he became regional party chairman of the ÖVP Carinthia, a position he held until 1999.
He began his political career as a member of the National Council for the ÖVP from 1986 to 1989. He then became Deputy Governor of Carinthia. When Jörg Haider ( FPÖ ) made a statement about “Ordinary employment policy in the Third Reich” in 1991 and was then voted out by the Carinthian state parliament on June 21, Christof Zernatto had the chance: he was voted on June 26 by the ÖVP and the SPÖ elected Governor of Carinthia.
In the subsequent state elections in Carinthia in 1994 , the ÖVP was able to gain something and, with 9 mandates (23.8%), again received the lowest share of the vote of the three major parties, but since an FPÖ-SPÖ coalition failed, Christof Zernatto won the vote again Elected governor by ÖVP and SPÖ.
In the 1999 election , the FPÖ became the party with the strongest vote for the first time with large gains, the ÖVP, with losses as before, third. Jörg Haider became governor, Christof Zernatto moved into the second row as a member of the state parliament and was again a member of the national council.
In 2002 he stepped down from his political positions and decided to work as a management consultant in the future .
Zernatto is an honorary member of the Catholic school association K.Ö.St.V. Paulinia to St. Paul in the MKV .
