The state elections in Carinthia in 1999 took place on March 7, 1999. The Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) lost its mandate and majority of votes as well as two seats to the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), which was able to gain three seats and for the first time in its history rose to become the strongest force in a federal state. The Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) was unable to continue its recovery that began in 1994 and achieved its worst result in Carinthia since 1945.

In addition to the three parties established in the state parliament, the Platform Democracy 99 , an electoral alliance of the Green Carinthia , the United Greens Austria (VGÖ), the Unity List - Enotna Lista (EL) and the Liberal Forum (LIF) as well as the Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ ) ran for candidates ), which, however, failed to enter the state parliament.

In 1999, 420,344 people were eligible to vote in the state elections, which meant an increase in the number of people entitled to vote by 2,724. The turnout in 1999 was 80.50% and was thus significantly lower than in 1994 (85.32%).
