The state elections in Carinthia in 1979 took place on October 7, 1979. The Socialist Party of Austria (SPÖ) was able to hold first place and the absolute majority of the mandate and increase its share of the vote. The Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) and the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) were also able to maintain their mandate, although both parties lost votes to the SPÖ. The Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ) and the Carinthian Unity List (Koroska enotna lista, KEL) lost shares in the vote and again failed to enter the state parliament.

In 1979, 366,399 people were entitled to vote in the state elections, which meant an increase in the number of people entitled to vote by 18,991. The turnout in 1979 was 83.21% and was thus significantly lower than in 1975 (88.07%).
