State election in Carinthia in 1989
The state elections in Carinthia in 1989 took place on March 12, 1989.
initial situation
It was the first choice after the retirement of the long-term governor Leopold Wagner . The scandal surrounding the Magdalen pulp mill is often said to be of great importance for this election, for which responsibility was placed with the ruling SPÖ.
Results
The Socialist Party of Austria (SPÖ) lost its absolute majority and three seats to the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ). The FPÖ achieved its best result to date in the election and was able to overtake the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP), which also lost three mandates to the FPÖ. In addition to the parties established in the state parliament, the Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ), the United Greens of Austria (VGÖ), the List of Other Carinthia (Durgacna Koroska, GAL) and the List of Nonpartisan Carinthians (LPK) also ran.
In 1989, 401,759 people were eligible to vote in the state elections, which meant an increase of 16,411 people eligible to vote. The turnout in 1989 was 90.08%, which is a sharp rise compared to 1979 (82.96%).

consequences
For the first time since the state elections in 1965, the SPÖ lost an absolute majority. The MPs of the FPÖ and ÖVP elected Jörg Haider as governor. However, due to his statement about the "employment policy in the Third Reich", Haider was voted out of office in 1991 with the votes of the SPÖ and ÖVP. His successor was Christof Zernatto (ÖVP).
