The state elections in Carinthia in 1953 took place on February 22, 1953. The Socialist Party of Austria (SPÖ) was able to expand its first place and, by gaining three mandates, achieved half of all state parliament seats. The Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) was able to keep its second place, but lost a mandate to the SPÖ. The electoral party of the Independent (WdU) also lost two seats to the SPÖ and took third place. The Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ), which ran together with the Left Socialists and the Democratic Union under the name Wahlgemeinschaft Österreichische Volksopposition (VO), remained almost unchanged and was able to keep its mandate.

In 1953, 285,615 people were entitled to vote in the state elections, which meant an increase of 18,343 people entitled to vote. The turnout in 1953 was 90.86%, which is a significant decrease compared to 1949, when 93.99% of those eligible to vote took part in the election.
