The state elections in Carinthia in 1956 took place on May 13, 1956. The Socialist Party of Austria (SPÖ) was able to maintain its first place and its mandate. The Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) also took second place again, but was able to win an additional mandate. Third place went to the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), which was running for the first time and emerged from the electoral party of the Independent (WdU). The FPÖ had lost a mandate to its predecessor organization. In addition, the Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ) ran as “Communists and Left Socialists” (KLS) and was able to hold its only mandate. The National Social Workers' Party (NSAP), on the other hand, clearly failed to enter the state parliament.

In 1956, 288,034 people were eligible to vote in the state elections, which meant an increase of 2,419 people eligible to vote. The turnout in 1956 was 94.26% and was thus significantly higher than in 1953, when 90.86% of the electorate took part in the election.
