Life

After elementary school in Hermagor and Spittal an der Drau, Peter Ambrozy attended secondary school in Spittal and Klagenfurt . After graduating from high school in 1964, he devoted himself to studying law at the University of Vienna , which he obtained in 1973 with the title Dr. iur. could complete.

His professional activity had already started in the economic policy department of the Vienna Chamber of Labor from 1969 to 1973. He then returned to Carinthia , where he was secretary to Governor Leopold Wagner from 1973 to 1980 in the office of the Carinthian provincial government . This was followed by the appointment of director of the Carinthian state parliament office and then the activity as state party secretary of the Carinthian SPÖ from 1983 to 1988. From 1995 to 2005 he was employed again by the Carinthian state government.

Peter Ambrozy's political career began as a member of the Federal Council for the SPÖ from 1983 to 1984. From 1984 onwards, he was a member of the Carinthian state parliament for four years . In 1988 he took over the post of Governor of Carinthia from Leopold Wagner, but he only held this position until the following year, when the Carinthian SPÖ lost the state election against the FPÖ with Jörg Haider . He also lost the state party chairmanship of the SPÖ Carinthia, which he held in the same years.

From 1989 to 1994 he was deputy governor, after which he found himself again as a member of the Carinthian parliament until 2000. Then came another rise to the state governor's deputy, and with him a renewed appointment as state party chairman of the SPÖ. As at the time after the lost state election in 1989, there was a strong power struggle in the state government between him and Jörg Haider for the following years, but this time Peter Ambrozy lacked support. He experienced harsh criticism, especially from his own political camp, the low point of his acceptance was only 61 percent of the votes at the state party conference in 2004. His critics stated that Peter Ambrozy had not yet won an election against Jörg Haider, but initially they lacked alternative candidates. which is why he kept his position for another year.

With his resignation as state party chairman of the SPÖ in autumn 2005, he also resigned as deputy governor in order to withdraw from political life. His chosen successor as regional party leader at a special party conference on October 29, 2005 became a woman for the first time: Gabriele Schaunig-Kandut . She also succeeded him in the state government.

Other important activities were the chairmanship of the ARGE Alpen-Adria in 1988 and the chairmanship of the Presidium of the Red Cross Carinthia - a position that Peter Ambrozy has held since 1997 to this day. He is married and lives in Klagenfurt.
