The Kleine Pal is an 1867  m above sea level. A. high mountain in the Carnic main ridge in the border area between Carinthia and Italy. It is located near the village of Kötschach-Mauthen . In the Alpine Mountain War of 1915–1918 he was the scene of a positional war between the Austro-Hungarian and Italian armies . The former positions and trenches were made accessible again by the friends of the Dolomites under the direction of Walther Schaumann as an open-air museum with over 70 objects and are now accessible as an open-air museum.

Although the name Großer Pal suggests a higher mountain, at 1809  m it is lower than its little brother.

history

View from the summit of the former positions and trenches built into the rock

After Italy declared war on Austria-Hungary on May 23, 1915, the Carnic Main Ridge became a frontline area. The area around the Plöckenpass in particular was the scene of heavy fighting, as the only connecting road that could be used to break through into the Gailtal ran here. A war of positions broke out on the karst-like summit plateau, partly overgrown with mountain pines and criss-crossed by small valleys, crevices and hollows, which was only interrupted by the Austrian occupation of the Trincerone position on March 26, 1916. Due to the heavy fire, the troops had dug themselves deep into the rock. Caverns, connecting tunnels and galleries were created. The supply was ensured via paths, trails and material ropeways. At times around 2000 soldiers faced each other on the mountain. In the late autumn of 1917, this section of the front was evacuated by Italian units after the Austro-Hungarian army, supported by German troops, had managed to break through the Italian front line at Flitsch and Tolmein in the Twelfth Battle of the Isonzo .

Climbs

From the Plöckenpass, the Kleine Pal is accessible through climbs on the Austrian and Italian sides. The Austrian normal route leads from the top of the pass over the reconstructed “machine gun nose” and the northwest side to the summit area. Another ascent is the former Landsturmweg over the Westkote. Until 2009 there was a via ferrata north of the pass to the Kleine Pal, which was dismantled due to the risk of falling rocks and rebuilt on the opposite Frischenkofel .

Several multi-pitch routes lead up the mountain through the west face. Probably the most climbed is the Spigolo de Infanti . From the Italian side, the Alpiniweg leads over the southern flank to the Giovanni Macchi monument .
