Rainer Holbe (born February 10, 1940 in Komotau , Reichsgau Sudetenland ) is a German journalist , author and television presenter .

Life

Holbe grew up in Frankfurt am Main and attended the Realschule Deutschherrenschule there and then briefly a language school. Holbe first learned the trade of publishing clerk . He then began his journalistic career in 1959 as a volunteer at the Frankfurter Rundschau , where he was an editor from 1960 to 1965. He became known through his work for magazines, radio ( Hessischer Rundfunk , Antenne Bayern and Radio Luxemburg ) and television ( ZDF , RTL and Sat.1 ).

Rainer Holbe was discovered as a presenter at a casting organized by Hessischer Rundfunk when a successor to Hans-Joachim Kulenkampff was being sought for the program Bunter Abend , which was broadcast by the radio station and NDR . Holbe took part in this quiz master's competition in order to later write a report from a candidate's point of view for the Frankfurter Rundschau. Holbe also worked for a long time in the print sector. Until 1972 he was head of the Burda publishing house in Frankfurt .

His first series was The darned month - a quiz about current affairs (1968–1972). His show Starparade (1968–1980) was one of the most successful ZDF formats . In 1987 Holbe was awarded the Golden Camera .

Holbe moderated the talk show Die Woche on RTL (1988–1992). From 1988 to March 1990 he hosted the RTL breakfast TV station Guten Morgen Deutschland and the series Unglaubliche Stories (1984–1988), a format that he re-launched on Sat.1 with Fantastic Phenomena (1992/93). In both series, Holbe and the parapsychologist Elmar R. Gruber dealt with supposedly mysterious experiences.

The change from RTL to Sat.1 was preceded by anti-Semitism allegations that Stern had raised against Rainer Holbe. In March 1990 Holbe published a book in the RTL edition at Knaur- Verlag under the title Why does this happen to me? , in which he presented statements from several so-called "sensitives" that were supposedly dictated to them by spirits from the hereafter. These ghosts told them details from the earlier lives of prominent contemporary witnesses, including about the Jewish radio and television presenter Hans Rosenthal, who died in 1987 . In addition, the "development of humanity" was stopped by "the Jews" through the crucifixion of Jesus. Although Holbe emphasized that these were only quotes and that he had "in no way" intended to justify the Holocaust , colleagues declined to continue working with him, and RTL then terminated Holbe without notice. According to other information, however, there was an amicable termination of the cooperation with RTL; Holbe resigned from moderating breakfast television. At the end of March 1990, Knaur-Verlag announced that it would withdraw the book from trading.

Holbe has written over 30 books, mainly documentary novels and non-fiction books on phenomena of consciousness.

He lived in Luxembourg from 1974, the beginning of his presenter activity on the Four Happy Waves of Radio Luxemburg , and since 2003 in Frankfurt am Main . He is married and has 3 grandchildren.
