Ludwig Karl

Ludwig Karl (born December 21, 1957 in Vienna ) is an Austrian ballet dancer . Until 1999 he was the first solo dancer at the Vienna State Opera .

Life

After studying at the ballet school of the Vienna State Opera with Willy Fränzel , Alexander Ursualik and Edeltraud Brexner , Ludwig Karl was engaged at the Vienna State Opera in 1972 , where he made his debut on March 18, 1973. In the same year he completed a three-week course in New York with David Howard, Stanley Williams and Robert Denvers, and also studied in Monte Carlo with Marikka Besobrasova.

In 1981 Ludwig Karl was appointed soloist at the Vienna State Opera and was subsequently principal dancer at the Vienna State Opera from 1991 to 1999. He performed ballet at the Vienna State and Volksoper and played leading roles in The Nutcracker , Joseph's Legend , Swan Lake , Sleeping Beauty , The Firebird , Raymonda , Romeo and Juliet , Daphnis and Chloe , Giselle and Spartakus , among others as partner of Rudolf Nurejew , Lilly Scheuermann , Maria Luise Jaska, Kevin Haigen or Judith Jamison.

His choreographic and personal collaboration included ballet productions with George Balanchine , Michail Baryschnikow , Rudolf Nurejew, John Neumeier , Hans von Manen , Rudi van Dantzig , Heinz Spörli , Valery Panov , Erich Walter , Waclaw Orlikowsky, Aurel von Miloss , John Cranko , Liz King.

International guest engagements have taken him to opera houses in Japan, Korea, Bangkok, France, Italy, Ireland, Spain, Graz, Salzburg, Hamburg and Switzerland.

He also completed roles in ballet adaptations , such as Carmen , Josephs Legende , and other television appearances, including from 1974 to 1997 as a soloist at the New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic .

After finishing his active career as a dancer, Ludwig Karl was appointed a member of the Joint Commission for Ballet and Contemporary Dance and appointed as a ballet teacher at two state-recognized stage training institutions with public rights: he has been a lecturer in classical ballet at the Vienna Conservatory since 2003 and a lecturer since 2007 for classical ballet at the Vienna Conservatory Sunrise Studios.
