Hans van Manen (born July 11, 1932 in Nieuwer-Amstel ) is a Dutch choreographer . He is considered one of the great innovators in European ballet . His classical dance language developed from music was able to emancipate himself from his role model George Balanchine . Men and women act equally in his choreographies.

Life

After training as a make- up artist , Manen began his ballet training. He studied with Sonia Gaskell , Françoise Adret and Nora Kiss , among others . From 1952 he danced with the Ballet Recital, then with the Ballet of the Amsterdam Opera and in 1959 with the company of Roland Petit .

In 1957 he choreographed his first ballet with Feestgericht . In 1960 he was one of the founding members of the Nederlands Dans Theater , of which he was artistic director from 1961 to 1970. He then worked freelance and between 1974 and 1987 as a ballet master for Het Nationale Ballet .

From 1988 his choreographies were mainly created for the NDT. Van Manen's work comprises around 120 mostly shorter choreographies, and he was often responsible as a costume designer. He also worked as an artistic photographer.

Choreographies

Although van Manen emphasized that dance is only about dance, human relationships run through his oeuvre. It shows strong personalities who are characterized by the equality of men and women. He almost exclusively uses music that was not written for ballet, often compositions from the 20th century. His most important works are in the repertoire of numerous companies.
