Sonia Gaskell (born April 14, 1904 in Vilkaviškis , † July 9, 1974 in Paris ) was a Dutch dance teacher , choreographer and ballet director.

Life

She was initially engaged by Sergei Pavlovich Djagilew and taught in Paris from 1936 to 1939. Then she settled down as a dance teacher in Amsterdam , where she founded the Ballet Recital Group after World War II.

In 1954 Gaskell became director of the Nederlands Ballet and founded the Dutch Ballet Academy in The Hague . In 1959 she was appointed director of the Amsterdam Ballet, from which the Dutch National Ballet emerged in 1961. Until 1969 she was its artistic director. Gaskell has choreographed numerous ballets, but she became one of the most important pioneering personalities of Dutch ballet primarily as an organizer and teacher.
