German dance award
The German Dance Prize is the most prestigious award for artistic dance in Germany.
It has been awarded annually since 1983: 1983 to 1986 by the German Professional Association for Dance Education e. V. (DBfT) together with the specialist journal Ballett-Journal / Das Tanzarchiv , from 1987 to 1994 solely by the DBfT, since 1995 in connection with the DBfT by the Association for the Promotion of Dance Art in Germany. V. and from 2013 independently by the Friends of Dance Art Germany. In 2018, the German Dance Prize will be awarded for the first time by the Dachverband Tanz Deutschland, jointly funded by the City of Essen, the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and federal funds. The previously undoped prize has been endowed with 20,000 euros since 2018.
The German Dance Prize honors outstanding personalities of dance in Germany. The focus is on the artistic work of the choreographers and dancers, but personalities in education, journalism, science or other areas of dance can also be suggested.
A CURRENT dance prize will also honor outstanding performers and ensembles as well as special developments in the dance landscape. These can be future-oriented initiatives, model concepts as well as extraordinary productions.
Since 2018, the Tanzpreis AKTUELL category has replaced the categories "Recognition Prize" and the "German Dance Prize Future". This went to young dancers in the three categories of female dance, male dance and choreography.
