Ulrich Roehm (born September 14, 1933 in Essen ) is a former German ballet dancer and ballet teacher who is committed to greater visibility, better networking and a stronger voice of dance in Germany. Roehm lives in Essen and was married to Renate Roehm, b. Meyer (1939-2014); they had three daughters together.

Life and ballet career

Roehm began his dance studies in 1951 with the ballet of the Städtische Bühnen Dortmund and continued his studies from 1953 to 1958 at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen under Kurt Jooss up to the master class .

In addition to other first appearances, Roehm appeared in July 1957 as “Peter” in “ Peter and the Wolf ” in the choreography by Kurt Jooss and danced alongside his fellow students Adele Schulte-Zurhausen as “Vogel” and Pina Bausch as “Cat” and others. a. in the Krupp Villa Huegel in Essen.

Educational activity, memberships

Roehm's teaching activity began in Canada, and after passing a corresponding dance-pedagogical examination, he became a member of the Canadian Dance Teachers Association (CDTA).

He also became a member of the Academy (ARAD Associated Member of the RAD) when he passed the exams at the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) in London. Later (1975) he was entrusted with the establishment of the Royal Academy of Dance in Germany and thus represented the RAD for Germany and Austria.

In addition to his engagements as a dancer, Roehm built three ballet studios in the Toronto area within 2 years and taught on the basis of the curriculum of the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD).

In 1974 Roehm returned with his family from Canada after opening the "Ballet Studio Roehm" in Essen in October 1973, which he directed for over thirty years. The lessons were also carried out according to the RAD curriculum and included the possible participation of the students in RAD exams. In addition, Roehm opened “La Danse”, a specialist ballet shop with mail order business, which still exists today and was taken over by a former student.

In 1984 Roehm founded the "Ballettommer Bozen / Bolzano Danza" (today Tanz Bozen / Bolzano Danza), which was first performed in 1985 and was artistic director for 22 years.

Association work

In 1975 Roehm founded the German Professional Association for Dance Education eV (at that time still under the name "Association of Ballet Schools in Germany") and was its first chairman from its foundation until 2012. In this function, he was also the editor and editor of the magazine BALLETT INTERN, which appears up to five times a year. Important topics and activities of the association at that time were:

Since co-founding the “Standing Conference on Dance” in 2006, Roehm was a board member of the umbrella organization until 2014, which was renamed to “Dachverband Tanz Deutschland” on his suggestion.

At the beginning of the 2000s he made contact with Shanghai, China and Roehm was appointed “Ballet Consultant” of the China Shanghai International Arts Festival and, together with his wife, was a VIP guest at the festival for many years. In 2008 he was given the honorable task of organizing a large ballet gala with the participation of 10 international ballet companies for the co-opening of the festival for the 10th anniversary. Furthermore, he was asked to give a lecture on the 10th anniversary of the festival. Another major lecture took place within the framework of a “Conference of International Festival Directors” in the renowned “Guest House of the City of Shanghai”.
