Jean Cébron

Jean-Maurice Cébron (born April 29, 1927 in Paris - † February 1, 2019 ) was a dancer , choreographer and dance teacher .

He was a member of Kurt Jooss' dance theater and embodied death as a dancer in his play The Green Table .

biography

Born in Paris, Cébron received his first private dance lessons in classical dance from 1945 to 1947 from his mother Mauricette Cébron, who was a soloist and lecturer at the Paris Opera. During this time he also worked with Djemil Anik, who taught Javanese dance.

In 1947/48 he studied with Sigurd Leeder and Ram Gopal (teachers of Indian dance and choreography). From 1948 to 1954 he was a soloist with the Ballet National Santiago de Chile and a teacher at the Institut Chilien Français in Chile. In the years 1954–57 he again studied intensively with Sigurd Leeder in London. He organized the first dance evenings, and he also studied classical dance with Anna Northcote. Invited by Ted Shawn to the USA, he studied the “Cecchetti Technique” intensively over the next three years with Margaret Craske and Alfredo Corvino at the Metropolitan Ballet Opera School , New York. In addition to his studies, he toured the United States with Lotte Goslar and, following an invitation from Ted Shawn, taught at the legendary University of the Dance of Jacob's Pillow in 1958 and 1959 .

Between 1961 and 1964 he was a choreographer, soloist and teacher at the Folkwangballett Essen under the direction of Kurt Jooss . From 1964 to 1967 he worked as a choreographer for the company and, among other things, danced his own choreographies with Pina Bausch in 1966/67 .

From 1969 to 1972 he directed the choreography course at the Dansskolar State Academy in Stockholm, Sweden. From 1973 to 1976 he was professor of modern dance at the Accademia nazionale di danza in Rome, Italy. In 1976 he was appointed professor for modern dance at the Folkwang University in Essen. Here he was also the training director of the "Folkwang-Tanzstudios" and the "Wuppertaler Tanztheater", both under the direction of Pina Bausch. He worked u. a. also as a teacher and choreographer with the "José Limon Company", New York. In addition to his teaching position at the Folkwang University, he teaches as a guest in various centers for modern dance around the world. His lessons are based on the Jooss-Leeder method in conjunction with the Cecchetti technique.
