Christian Spuck

Christian Spuck (born September 28, 1969 in Marburg ) is a German choreographer and director.

Artistic career

Christian Spuck completed his training as a classical and modern dancer at the John Cranko School in Stuttgart . After graduating in 1993 he was a dancer with the Needcompany (Brussels) under Jan Lauwers and with the Ensemble Rosas under Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker . In 1995 he was hired as a dancer at the Stuttgart Ballet .

Christian Spuck presented his first choreography in 1996 in the “Young Choreographers” series of the Stuttgart Noverre Society. In 1998 he was commissioned to choreograph a world premiere for the Stuttgart Ballet. More ballets followed for this and soon also for other ballet companies, with which Christian Spuck quickly attracted the interest of the public and specialist critics. His ballet dos amores , premiered in 1999, made him known to the American audience on a tour of the USA by the Stuttgart Ballet in 2000.

In 2001 Christian Spuck was appointed resident choreographer of the Stuttgart Ballet. In 2003 he created his first full-length narrative ballet Lulu for the Stuttgart Ballet . A monster tragedy based on Frank Wedekind. This was followed by further full-length works for the Stuttgart Ballet ( Der Sandmann after ETA Hoffmann), the Aalto Ballett Theater Essen ( The Children after Edward Bond; Leonce and Lena after Georg Büchner), the Royal Ballet of Flanders ( The Return of Ulysses ) and the Theaterhaus Stuttgart ( Don Q. with Egon Madsen and Eric Gauthier ).

The following ballet ensembles have works by Christian Spuck in their repertoire, including mostly ballets that were premiered by the respective ensemble: Stuttgart Ballet, Staatsballett Berlin, Aalto Ballett Theater (Essen), Ballet of the State Theater Karlsruhe, Ballet of the State Theater Saarbrücken, Gauthier Dance (Theaterhaus Stuttgart), Royal Ballet of Flanders (Antwerp), Royal Swedish Ballet ( Royal Swedish National Opera , Stockholm), Israel Ballet (Tel Aviv), Aterballetto (Reggio Emilia, Italy), Finnish National Ballet (Helsinki), Ballet Riga (Latvia), American Ballet Theater (New York City), Hubbard Street Dance 2 (Chicago, USA).

In 2005 Christian Spuck staged the opera Berenice (composer: Johannes Maria Staud) at the Theater der Stadt Heidelberg and in 2010 Verdi's Falstaff at the Staatstheater Wiesbaden . In 2009 Christian Spuck (direction and choreography) staged the opera Orphée et Euridice at the State Theater Stuttgart . In 2011 Christian Spuck created a full-length dance production based on Georg Büchner's Woyzeck for the Norwegian Opera Ballet in Oslo .

At the beginning of the 2012/2013 season, Christian Spuck succeeded Heinz Spoerli as director of the Zurich Ballet at the Zurich Opera House (director: Andreas Homoki ). Among others, the following of his choreographies have so far been seen at the opera house: Romeo and Juliet , Leonce and Lena , Woyzeck , Solitude , Sonett , Anna Karenina and Nutcracker and the Mouse King . Spuck works regularly with the British set and costume designer Emma Ryott . In the summer of 2014, his contract, which originally ran until the 2016/2017 season, was Template: future / in 2 yearsextended to 2021/2022 .
