Ballet Zurich

The ballet Zurich is the largest professional ballet company of Switzerland . It is based at the Zurich Opera House and consists of 36 dancers. Christian Spuck has been director of the Zurich Ballet since the 2012/2013 season .

The ensemble danced in front of a total of 48,061 visitors in the 2012/13 season, which corresponds to a seat occupancy of 93.5%.

history

The Zurich Ballet emerged from the former ballet of the city ​​theater . From 1978 to 1985, the balanchine specialist Patricia Neary held the position of ballet director. From 1985, at the age of 26, Uwe Scholz, who died in 2004, took over the management of the Zurich Ballet until 1991, as the youngest director of a dance ensemble in Europe. Subsequently, the Zurich Ballet was led by Bernd Roger Bienert until 1996 .

Heinz Spoerli , ballet director from 1996 to 2012, established the company among the leading European ballet formations. A neoclassical dance style of ballets, such as Goldberg Variations , Midsummer Night's Dream or Peer Gynt , as well as the great classical story ballets such as Giselle or Nutcracker was cultivated . The company also presented works by other choreographers, such as George Balanchine , Mats Ek , William Forsythe , Jiří Kylián , Hans von Manen and Twyla Tharp .

Christian Spuck , former choreographer of the Stuttgart Ballet , has directed the Ballet Zurich (previously known as the Zurich Ballet) since the 2012/13 season .

Internationally renowned choreographers such as William Forsythe, Paul Lightfoot , Sol León , Douglas Lee , Martin Schläpfer , Jiří Kylián, Wayne McGregor , Marco Goecke and Mats Ek have already worked with the Ballet Zurich.

Junior ballet

The Junior Ballet was founded in 2001 to promote young dancers. Fourteen young dancers are given the opportunity to make a supervised transition from the end of their vocational training to entering full professional life. As part of a commitment that does not last longer than two years, they train together with the members of the Zurich Ballet, dance with them in selected performances of the repertoire and every season in a ballet evening put together especially for them with world premieres by Douglas Lee or Christian Spuck .

The performances are accompanied by a comprehensive supporting program with introductory matinees before the ballet premieres, introductions to plays before the performances, regular ballet talks and a large number of special children, youth and school projects.
