Jiří Kylián (born March 21, 1947 in Prague , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech ballet dancer and choreographer .

Life

Kylián began his dance training at the age of 9 at the Prague National Theater Ballet School. At 15 he entered the Prague Conservatory .

In 1967 Kylián was able to study at the Royal Ballet School in London through a scholarship . This was the first time he came into contact with new choreographic developments both in ballet and in contemporary dance . After graduating, the choreographer and director of the Stuttgart Ballets , John Cranko , signed him as a dancer and encouraged him to become a choreographer himself.

In 1973 he had his first choreography for the Nederlands Dans Theater , which was followed by around 70 more for the company. From 1975 to 1999 Kylián was artistic director of the Nederlands Dans Theater. In 1978 the international breakthrough came with the piece Sinfonietta to the music of Leoš Janáček at the US Spoleto Festival in Charleston . In the following years he established himself internationally, and the works Symphony of Psalms , Forgotten Land , Overgrown Path , Svadebka , Stamping Ground and l'Enfant et les sortileges were created .

On April 13, 1995, Kylián was awarded the Dutch Orde van Oranje Nassau for his choreographic work and his lifelong dedication to dance .

style

From the mid-1980s onwards, Kylián's artistic views and style have turned in an abstract and surrealist direction. The result was the Black and White Program , with the choreographies No More Play , Petite Mort , Sarabande , Falling Angels , Sweet Dreams , Whereabouts Unknown , as well as his production of the Japanese fairy tale Kaguyahime .

Over the years, Kylián has developed a personal style that defies academic characterization.
