Lawrence County is a county in the state of South Dakota in the United States . The county seat is in Deadwood . At the 2010 census , the county had 24,097 people.
geography
According to the US Census, Lawrence County covers an area of 2073 square kilometers, of which 1 square kilometer (0.03 percent) is water. The district consists of one township : St. Onge and two disorganized territories: North Lawrence and South Lawrence. It borders in the clockwise direction to the counties: Butte County , Meade County , Pennington County , Weston County ( Wyoming ) and Crook County (Wyoming).
history
The county was incorporated on January 11, 1875 and the administrative organization was completed on March 5, 1877. It was named after John Lawrence (? –1889), an early Sioux Falls settler and politician who was a member of the legislative assembly of the Dakota Territory .
Two places in the county have National Historic Landmark status , the Deadwood Historic District and the Frawley Ranch . 52 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 2, 2018).
