career

He didn't get into dancing until he was 27. After dancing a role with his twin sister as a child and completing a course in Graham technique at 17 , he first decided to go to the theater and from 1965 studied drama at Marieborg Volks College. This was followed by a job at the puppet theater, Marionetteatern and the Royal Drama Theater in Stockholm until 1973 (with Ingmar Bergman, among others ).

In 1972 Ek resumed his dance training and joined the Cullberg Ballet , directed by his mother . In 1975 he went to Düsseldorf as a dancer for the ballet of the Deutsche Oper and in 1976 created his first choreography for the Cullberg Ballet. From 1978 he shared the artistic direction of her company with his mother and took it over entirely from 1985 to 1993.

The company became internationally known under Ek with newly designed choreographies for Giselle (1982) and Schwanensee (1987). In 1980/81 he also danced and choreographed for the Nederlands Dans Theater . When Ek left the Cullberg Ballet in 1993, he wrote and choreographed Dance with Your Neighbor (Dans met Nästan), which he also directed. His next work was a dance theater version of Don Juan based on Molière .

This was followed by a break, which he ended in November 2000. He produced two dance videos with Sylvie Guillem . Today Mats Ek works for various international dance theaters, studies his choreographies and directs.
