From 1945 to 1946 Peter worked again as a locksmith. During this time he joined the KPD and after the founding of the SED he became a member of the party. Peter served in Nordhausen from 1946 to 1949 in various positions in the local people's police . After a special course in the Soviet Union, in which the later leadership elite of the GDR armed forces was trained, Peter served again in the People's Police and in the Barracked People's Police (KVP) from 1950 to 1956 . After graduating from the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR “K. J. In 1972 the border troops were formally hived off from the NVA. This changed the name of Peters' position.
