Panzerwaffe was in the German Wehrmacht until 1945 the general term for armored fighting vehicles , battle tanks , armored personnel carriers or, in the public perception, simply tanks . But this also referred to the main weapon system of the tank troops .

In the German Federal Armed Forces , the most heavily armored and most flexibly armed weapon system of the armored forces is called battle tanks .
