Gottfried Erich Rosenthal (born February 13, 1745 in Nordhausen ; † May 26, 1813 there ) was a pioneer in meteorology , a manufacturer of measuring instruments and a ducal-Gotha mountain commissioner .

Life

The eldest son of a master baker in Nordhausen attended the municipal grammar school and was interested in mathematics and the exact determination of weights and measures at an early age. He wrote several leaflets on this subject. Because of his good geometrical knowledge, he also worked as a surveyor . His meteorological research began with a barometer from the Swiss inventor Jean-André Deluc , which he was able to significantly improve in precision. In 1780 he climbed the summit of the Brocken in order to be able to carry out experiments. He recognized the possibilities of barometric altitude measurement and thus improved maps and leveling plans of selected locations.

Another topic he was interested in was the determination of spring, for which he published numerous tables. The manufacture of meteorological devices became an important source of income and also gave him the acquaintance of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , who jokingly called Rosenthal the Nordhausen weather prophet .
