Burial with military honors in Ahlsdorf

Lutz Meier (born October 20, 1948 in Ahlsdorf ; † January 18, 1972 at Schierke ) was a fatality on the inner-German border .

Life

As a trained electrician, he became a lieutenant in the border troops of the GDR . On January 18, 1972, he was found dead north of the Bodesprung . He was shot and seriously wounded by the soldier Detlef K. when he tried to prevent him from escaping to the Federal Republic of Germany. After that, Meier killed himself with his Makarow service pistol, presumably due to the extremely painful injury . His death in the service of the GDR in connection with the border violation of the escaped patrol post was used by the GDR authorities for propaganda purposes.

Detlef K. was charged with manslaughter at the Hanover Regional Court in October 1972 . In July 1973, however, this refused to open main proceedings because the GDR public prosecutor's office had left a request for legal assistance from the Lower Saxony Minister of Justice unanswered and therefore insufficient evidence was available.

Honors

Posthumously, Lutz Meier was awarded the Gold Medal of Merit of the National People's Army .

In the GDR, several institutions were named after Lutz Meier, such as polytechnic high schools in Ahlsdorf , Schierke and Stendal and the clubhouse of the VEB Elektromotorenwerk (ELMO) Wernigerode .
