Gillian Scalici (born August 9, 1950 in New York City ) is an American singer and dancer .

Life

Scalici grew up in New York and Milwaukee . Her stepfather was a jazz pianist . Scalici received classical ballet training . At the age of 14 she made her stage debut in the musical Oklahoma! . She completed a singing and dance training at the New York music school The Neighborhood Playhouse .

In the 1970s, Scalici appeared on New York Broadway in numerous musical productions, including Hair , Cabaret (as Sally Bowles), West Side Story (as Anita) and A Chorus Line (1975). In 1978 she was engaged by the Hamburg ballet director John Neumeier for the role of Anita at the Hamburg State Opera , which she sang there with great success with audiences and the press. In the 1985/86 season she took on the role of Nancy in a new production of the musical Oliver at the Munich State Theater on Gärtnerplatz ! (Premiere: May 1986, directed by August Everding ). In the 1991/92 season she played the role of taxi girl Hildy at the Hamburg State Opera in a new production of the musical On the Town (director / choreography: John Neumeier).

In the 1980s, Scalici was one of the most famous musical performers in German-speaking countries. She appeared in almost all major music and television shows, including the ZDF music shows disco and rock-pop in concert , the ARD shows Wir vier (1983) and Die Current Schaubude (1991), at Bio's Bahnhof and in the advice show Dalli Dalli (1985). In 1984 she was on German television and in the ARD TV show One will win as a singer. She was also a guest in the children's and youth series Sesame Street (episode: The Music Show ) in 1983.

Scalici recorded several singles and records and gave concerts with her own big band . In addition to musicals, swing and jazz were also part of her repertoire.

Occasionally Scalici also worked as an actress . In the television film Pommi Stern (1981), she played, alongside Stephan Schwartz , an English rock singer who, after years of unsuccessfulness in Germany, becomes a star and experiences a romance with a songwriter. In 1988 she played the role of Fanny Ziegfeld, a slightly frivolous American revue and musical star on a pleasure trip in the film Johanna d'Arc of Mongolia by the German filmmaker Ulrike Ottinger . In 1996 she appeared in the television miniseries Tanz auf dem Vulkan as the dancer Lila Block with Klausjürgen Wussow and Daniela Ziegler .

In the 1990s, Gillian Scalici took over the Stage School from Volker Ullmann and founded the first school for musical-oriented specialist training in Germany, the Stage School of Music, Dance and Drama Stage School in Hamburg , where he also taught.

Scalici is now back in the United States . She is married to the doctor Helmut Albrecht and is the mother of two children.
