Walther Schmieding

Walther Schmieding (born December 12, 1928 in Beuthen in Upper Silesia , † May 16, 1980 in Berlin ) was a German cultural journalist . He was best known as the presenter of the cultural program aspekte .

Life

Walther Schmieding was born on December 12, 1928 in Beuthen, Upper Silesia (today's Bytom). He studied economics, but then went to the newspaper, first to Recklinghausen . He then moved to the Ruhr Nachrichten in Dortmund , where he was a member of the culture section until 1963. He was mainly concerned with the relatively new medium of television . He switched to ZDF in Mainz, where he became the chief editor and presenter of the culture magazine aspekte .

In 1968 Schmieding was appointed artistic director of the Berliner Festspiele , for which he interrupted his work at ZDF until 1973. He received an offer from the Schauspielhaus Bochum , but turned it down in favor of his work at ZDF. He was also active as a writer. One of his best-known works is Uprising of the Daughters of 1979. He had been a member of the German PEN since 1975 and was Vice President there. Walther Schmieding died of cancer on May 16, 1980 at the age of 51 in Berlin.

Walther Schmieding's grave is located in the St.-Annen-Kirchhof in Berlin-Dahlem .
