He also completed a vocal degree. For several years he was a soloist in the cathedral choir of St. Stephan .

Bergmann became interested in boxing while still a student and began boxing himself.

Career

He began his journalistic career in the early 1960s for the Volksblatt of the ÖVP and in 1968 he switched to the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF) as a salaried editor . For the station he presented the sports mosaic from 1969 to 1974 .

At the beginning of 1975 Bergmann was commissioned by the then sports director Teddy Podgorsky to present the ORF show Sport on Monday . He then moderated them from February 3, 1975 to March 23, 1992, 819 times and for 17 years. In order to show that art and sport are not mutually exclusive, but rather have many common connections, the miner interested in culture brought personalities such as Peter Ustinov , Helmut Lohner , Otto Schenk and also Plácido Domingo and José Carreras to his show.

In 2008, 2012 and 2016 he was sent by the ORF as a boxing commentator to the Summer Olympics to comment on them.

During his time at ORF, he moderated and commented on around 3,500 boxing matches, more than anyone else in the German-speaking world, commenting on all of the major matches of Muhammad Ali , of whom he was a fan. Bergmann worked in the ORF sports department for 40 years. He is considered a boxing expert with cult status and as " Heinz Prüller of boxing".

Since around 1967 Bergmann has had a deeply connected friendship with Hans Orsolics , whom he helped back into normal life as a supporter and mentor when he fell financially and socially after his career. He wrote the biography Orsolics Hansi Ko - Triumphs and Sorrows of a Boxer through his friend . Bergmann "made films with him, hid him from the police, visited him in prison and helped him to a regular existence."

In the episode heavyweight of the television series Trautmann , he played himself as a boxing commentator. Hans Orsolics also appeared in it as himself.

Since 2010, Bergmann has been working with his good friend Ferdinand Macek on various sports documentaries that are broadcast on ORF Sport +, e. B. Joe Tiger Pachler in the eye of the tiger , Sepp Puschnig the Karawankenbär and Karl Schnabl and the Olympic high-flyer team . In 2011 Ferdinand Macek (director and author) shot the film Heilwasser for the Grand Vizier with Sigi Bergmann .

Bergmann is now retired and has been a grandfather several times, but is still active. The boxing expert has been married to Ingeborg Bergmann for more than 40 years, with whom he has two daughters and five grandchildren. His daughter Elisabeth is a journalist and his daughter Eva is a doctor . Since he retired, he has had more time for music, so he goes to the opera at least once a week.
