Georg Schmidt (soccer coach)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Georg "Schurl" Schmidt (born April 7, 1927 , † July 6, 1990 ) was an Austrian football coach . He was in charge of the Austrian national team at the 1982 World Cup in Spain.

Coaching career

Schmidt began his professional career as a secondary school teacher in Bruck an der Leitha , where he also worked as a trainer for the school team, which he led to the Lower Austrian school title in 1957. From the 1960s he worked as a specialist teacher at the Austrian Football Association , where he directed coach training and looked after various selection teams. In 1967 he and Viktor Hierländer were responsible for the amateur national team , which won the European championship.

He became known to the general public as the eternal number two on the coaching bench of the national team. In 1970 he took over the position of assistant coach under team principal Leopold Šťastný and also carried out this activity under his successors Branko Elsner , Helmut Senekowitsch and Karl Stotz . He also took part in the 1978 World Cup in Argentina.

After the national team had also qualified for the following World Cup, there was a rift between team boss Stotz and ÖFB President Karl Sekanina . Stotz was relieved of his post and after the plan to get Ernst Happel involved in the World Cup failed, the ÖFB decided to put the national team in the hands of long-time assistant Schurl Schmidt. The club coach Felix Latzke was provided to support him . With this coaching duo, the Austrians reached the qualification for the second group stage and eighth place, but the participation was overshadowed by the non-aggression pact of Gijón .

After the world championship, Schmidt moved back into the second tier and became assistant coach under his successor Erich Hof .
