Peter Lagger

Peter Lagger (born September 7, 1930 in Buchs , Canton St. Gallen , † September 17, 1979 in Berlin ) was a Swiss opera singer ( bass ).

Life

education

First he learned to play the piano at the Zurich Conservatory , then at the Vienna Conservatory and in Italy . However, he finally had his voice trained in Vienna with Hans Duhan and others.

Career

Peter Lagger's career began in Graz , then from 1955 to 1957 he went to the Zurich Opera House . He sang at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera in 1957 . From 1957 to 1959 Lagger was engaged at the State Theater Wiesbaden and from 1959 to 1963 at the Frankfurt Opera. He then moved to the Deutsche Oper Berlin , where he stayed until his death. Here he earned his good reputation and began an international career, during which he appeared in many important operas around the world.

At the Salzburg Festival from 1963 to 1964 he was Bartolo in the opera The Marriage of Figaro ( Le Nozze do Figaro ) and in 1964 the Banco in the opera Macbeth by Giuseppe Verdi . In 1965 he made a guest appearance in Geneva . In August 1966 he was a member of the ensemble of the opera premiere Die Bassariden by Hans Werner Henze at the Salzburg Festival . In 1967 he first appeared on stage in Berlin in the title role of the opera Boris Godunow , which has since been one of the highlights of his regular stage repertoire. At the opening of Expo '70 he also made a guest appearance by the Deutsche Oper in a performance of Richard Wagner's opera Lohengrin . He had guest appearances at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan , the Vienna State Opera as well as in Munich, Paris, Lyon, Rio de Janeiro, Warsaw, Naples, Aix-en-Provence , Lucerne, Orange and Madrid. Since 1972 he had a permanent contract for guest appearances at the Hamburg State Opera . In 1974 he appeared again at the Salzburg Festival in the premiere of Krzysztof Penderecki's Magnificat . In 1962 he was engaged at the premiere of the opera Alkestiade by Louise Talma at the Frankfurt Opera .

In addition to his operatic career, Lagger also appeared as a concert singer; his repertoire ranged from works by Johann Sebastian Bach to works by modern composers. He has also performed with many orchestras and recitals around the world.

family

Peter Lagger grew up in Switzerland, but his family is from Italy on his father's side and from Russia on his mother's side. Lagger's brother (* 1938), who worked under the stage name Alexander Malta , made a career as a bass-baritone , especially at the Munich Opera and the Stuttgart State Theater . Peter Lagger's son and daughter were born in 1966.

Honors

In 1970 Peter Lagger received the honorary title of chamber singer from the Berlin Senate. His performance at the side of Antal Doráti and Rose Marie Freni-Pallo in Bluebeard (at the Kennedy Center ) was described by the critics as "an artistic triumph " ("an artistic triumph").
