Werner Schröder (zoologist)

Werner Schröder (born December 19, 1907 in Bochum , † July 2, 1985 in Berlin ), studied zoologist , botanist and paleontologist , was director of the Berlin aquarium for many years . He directed and organized its reconstruction after the Second World War .

Professional background

After graduating from high school, Werner Schröder began studying zoology , biology and palaeontology at the Friedrich Wilhelm University in Berlin in 1929 . After the Second World War, he was appointed deputy head and managing director by the Berlin magistrate and shortly afterwards, on September 29, 1945, he was appointed commercial director of the zoological garden. By setting up restaurant businesses and organizing an annual Oktoberfest in the zoological garden, Schröder was able to generate income that benefited the reconstruction of the zoological garden.

The reconstruction of the Berlin aquarium began in 1952 under the direction of Schröder as director of the aquarium. Schröder made this activity his "life's work". After the first partial reopening of the aquarium on the ground floor in September 1952, the opening of the terrarium followed in 1956 and that of the insectarium in 1959 . As early as 1968, Schröder was able to present the world's most species-rich collection of all aquariums in Berlin.

In 1977 Werner Schröder retired. On August 2, 1979, he married Inge Sievers . He died in 1985 and was buried in the Friedenau cemetery.

In July 2013 Inge Sievers-Schröder founded the Werner Schröder Foundation with the aim of promoting scientific school projects and helping victims of acts of violence.

On 18 November 1974 Werner Schröder was the then German President Gustav Heinemann , the Federal Cross of Merit awarded.

The grave at the Friedenau cemetery was an honorary grave of the State of Berlin from 1990 to 2014 .

Since 2002, in addition to the existing Berlin commemorative plaques for Oskar Heinroth and Katharina Heinroth , there has been another commemorating Werner Schröder on the street facade of the aquarium . On December 19, 2007, Schröder's 100th birthday, a bust created by Heinz Spilker at the feet of the Iguanodon presented there was placed in front of the aquarium (garden side) in the presence of Schröder's widow .
