Playmobil: Der Film (Original title: Playmobil: The Movie ) is a French computer animation film by Lino DiSalvo , which is based on the German system toy Playmobil . The film opened in German cinemas on August 29, 2019.

action

The first real film sequence shows 18-year-old Marla who takes care of her younger brother Charlie. They live together in New York City . They lose their parents in an accident and four years later Marla takes care of her brother. However, he rebels against his sister and, after a dispute, runs into a toy exhibition complex. Marla follows him.

When both suddenly disappear into the magically animated Playmobil universe, they have to go on an adventure to get back home. On her journey through new worlds, Marla meets very different companions, including the food truck owner Del, the secret agent Rex Dasher, a loyal robot, a godmother and many more. Several topics from the Playmobil universe such as pirates, cowboys, Romans, Vikings, science fiction, dinosaurs, fairy land and secret agents are shown.

Charlie joins the Vikings and distances himself from Marla. When Marla notices that Charlie is in the captivity of Emperor Maximus and is about to be sacrificed in a gladiatorial match with other figures from different areas , she goes in search of him. Del and Rex Dasher help her to find Charlie's place and to free it. During the course of the journey, Marla and Charlie realize that you can achieve anything in life if you believe in yourself.

Cast and dubbing

The German synchronization was created after the dialogue book and the dialogue director of Matthias von Stegmann by the synchronous company FFS Film & TV sync in Munich . The German lyrics were written by Klaus Rüdiger Paulus and the music directors were Thomas Amper and Joachim Wolf.

Reviews

The film received mostly negative ratings. Oliver Kube describes it as the weaker The LEGO Movie and gives it a rating of 2 out of 5 stars. In contrast to the LEGO Movie, there is less meta-humor and self-irony in the film and the film focuses on the younger target group, while The LEGO Movie was also well received by older viewers. It is also criticized that attempts are made to incorporate too many Playmobil sets into the film without giving them a cinematic depth. The LEGO Movie also had the license for many works, which made it possible to incorporate numerous pop cultural references that are missing in the Playmobil film. The music is also more intrusive and unmotivated than creating a catchy tune , as with Everything Is Awesome from the LEGO film.

The animations and action sequences are implemented properly, which was partly due to the fact that the animation director worked for Disney for 17 years and worked on films such as Frozen and Rapunzel - Newly spoiled . In addition, the synchronization with well-known actors and speakers is praised.

In the Internet Movie Database , the film was rated 4.3 stars out of 10. On Metacritic , the film reached only account for a Metascore of 25 points of 100. Internationally, the film was Variety with 40 points (out of 100) from the Hollywood Reporter with 30 points, of The Daily Telegraph with 20 and The Observer also rated with 20 points.

The German Film and Media Assessment (FBW) in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating “valuable”.

Gross profit

The film grossed around 16.3 million US dollars worldwide. This was offset by production costs of around 40 million US dollars, which made the film a commercial flop . Especially in the United States, where the film was only released on December 6, 2019, it suffered from stiff competition as it started two weeks after Frozen II and two weeks before Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker .

marketing

The film is marketed as a children's and family film and, according to the Voluntary Self-Regulation of the Film Industry (FSK), has no age limit.

The characters from the film were also released as a Playmobil set.
