Hoel, who started for Lyn Oslo , celebrated his first major success at the Svenska Skidspelen in Sundsvall in 1947 , where he won the special event . In 1951, when the Svenska Skidspelen were held again in Sundsvall, he achieved second place behind Karl Holmström . He won the Holmenkollen Ski Festival again for the first time in 1948 and 1951. At the Olympic Winter Games in Oslo in 1952 , Hoel jumped to 6th place. Four years later at the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo , he finished eleventh. At the Norwegian Championships in Drammen in 1956 , he won the gold medal ahead of Kjell Kopstad and Asgeir Dølplass . Five years earlier he had won the silver medal behind Erling Kroken at the Norwegian Championships in Narvik in 1951 . In 1956, because of his success, he was awarded the Holmenkollen Medal together with Borghild Niskin and Arnfinn Bergmann . At the Four Hills Tournament in 1958/59 he reached 3rd place in the overall tournament ranking. In 1959 he won the Holmenkollen Ski Festival again.
