Birger Ruud (born August 23, 1911 in Kongsberg , Norway ; † June 13, 1998 there ) was a Norwegian ski jumper and ski racer .

Career

Ruud was considered one of the world's best pre-war ski jumpers. In 1931, 1935 and 1937 he became world champion in jumping on the normal hill. At the Olympic Winter Games in 1932 and 1936 he won the gold medal in jumping from the normal hill. Ruud was also successful as an alpine ski racer . He reached 4th place in the Alpine Combined at the Olympic Games in 1936 and won the bronze medal in the Combined at the Alpine World Ski Championships in 1935 . In 1937 he was honored with the Holmenkollen Medal .

During the Second World War, Norway was occupied by the Germans. Ruud did not want to support the occupiers with his popularity and refused to take part in official competitions. As a result, he was imprisoned in the Grini police prison near Oslo from 1943 .

After the war he started again at the Winter Olympics in 1948 at the age of 36 and won the silver medal on the normal hill. At the opening of the 17th Olympic Games in 1994 in Lillehammer , Ruud was supposed to hoist the Olympic flag. However, he suffered a heart attack before the ceremony and was rushed to the hospital.

In Kongsberg the Birger Ruuds vei ( Eng . Birger-Ruud-Weg) is named after him.

Sigmund Ruud is his older brother.
