Skiing
Skiing , also known as skiing in Austria , is the collective term for all types of sport that require skiing as a sports device . Skiing, together with snowboarding, is part of snow sports and is a winter sport .
Competitive sports and popular sports
In skiing, a distinction is made between competitive sports and popular sports . The following disciplines are part of competitive skiing:
- Alpine skiing , with the following competitions: Downhill , Super-G , Giant Slalom , Slalom and Alpine Combination ;
- Nordic skiing , with the disciplines: cross-country skiing , ski jumping and Nordic combined ;
- Freestyle skiing , with the competitions: Slopestyle , Halfpipe and Skicross ;
- Biathlon , with the competitions: individual, sprint, pursuit, mass start and relay;
- Speed skiing ;
- Ski orienteering .
The popular sport equivalent to alpine skiing is skiing . Cross-country skiing and ski orienteering are also popular sports.
Skiing associations
The competitive as well as the popular sports area of skiing are organized in association structures. The nationwide association in Germany is the German Ski Association , in Austria the Austrian Ski Association and in Switzerland the Swiss-Ski . In addition, there are numerous other regional associations in the individual skiing regions in Germany.
Skiing as an economic factor
Skiing is also an important economic factor for winter sports areas. The added value of winter sports, including skiing, in Austria in 2008 was 7.11 billion euros. In Bavarian ski areas, day-trippers generate around 3,444 million euros in gross sales in the winter season, while overnight stays generate another 2,559.2 million euros in gross sales.
Equipment skiing
Skiing is not a completely safe sport: injuries to the shoulder, head and trunk are the most common. Most skiers who have had an accident, around a third, injure their knees. Safe ski equipment is therefore part of skiing. As accessories, skiers need skis and ski poles tailored to the respective sport:
- Ski helmets
- Ski goggles
- Ski clothing
- Ski boots
- Ski gloves
- Protectors
