Martin Koukal (born September 25, 1978 in Nové Město na Moravě ) is a former Czech cross-country skier and four-time Olympic athlete (1998, 2002, 2006, 2010).

Career

Koukal, who started for the Dukla Liberec , was able to celebrate his first successes as a junior. At the Junior World Championships in Calgary in 1997 , he finished third over 30 kilometers in freestyle. He was able to confirm this success a year later in the title fights in St. Moritz when he also won the silver medal in free technique over 10 km. He ran his first world cup races at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Trondheim in 1997 . There he finished 79th place over 10 km classic, 37th place in the pursuit and got his first World Cup points with 27th place over 30 km freestyle.

1998 Winter Olympics

At his first Olympic participation in 1998 in Nagano , he came 37th in the pursuit and 35th place over 10 km classic. In November 1998 he reached his first top ten placement in the World Cup with seventh place over 10 km freestyle in Muonio . His best placings at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1999 in Ramsau am Dachstein were 22nd place over 30 km freestyle and eighth place with the relay.

In December 1999 he came on the podium for the first time in the World Cup in Garmisch-Partenkirchen with third place in the sprint. His best result at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2001 in Lahti was 14th place in the relay and in the sprint. In the 2001/02 season he achieved three top ten results in the individual World Cup. He was also third in March 2002 in Lahti together with Lukáš Bauer in the team sprint.

2002 Winter Olympics

His best results at the season highlight, the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, were tenth place in the sprint and seventh place in the relay. In the following season he finished in the top ten four times in the individual World Cup and reached 23rd place in the overall World Cup and 20th place in the Sprint World Cup. This was his best result in the overall World Cup. At the season highlight of the 2003 World Cup in Val di Fiemme , he won the gold medal in the 50 km freestyle. He was also seventh in the relay, sixth in the skiathlon and fifth in the sprint. In March 2003, he took second place in the Engadin Skimarathon .

In the 2003/04 season he reached seven sprint participations in the World Cup, two top ten placements, including second place in the sprint in Düsseldorf at the beginning of the 2003/04 season and thus finished 16th in the Sprint World Cup .

The following year he won the bronze medal in the team sprint at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf together with Dušan Kožíšek . He also achieved 52nd place in the 15 km freestyle, 27th place in the skiathlon and eighth place with the relay. In March 2005 he was fourth in the Wasalauf and won the 10 km freestyle at the Nor-Am Cup in Winter Park .

2006 Winter Olympics

His best placings at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin were ninth place with the relay and seventh place in the 50 km mass start race. At the beginning of the 2006/07 season he finished third in Gällivare with the relay. In the further course of the season he came three times in the top ten and reached 22nd place in the Distance World Cup. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Sapporo in 2007 , he finished 26th in the 15 km freestyle, 21st place in the 50 km mass start race and eighth place with the relay.

After first place in the relay in Davos at the beginning of the 2007/08 season, he achieved twelfth place overall in the 2007/08 Tour de Ski with two top ten results. In February 2008, he finished third with the relay in Falun . He finished the season in 33rd place in the overall World Cup. In the following season, which he finished in 45th place in the overall world cup , he came ninth in the cross-country skiing world cup finals in Falun. He achieved third place in the prologue race over 3.3 km freestyle.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec in 2009 he came eleventh in the relay, ninth in the skiathlon and seventh in the 50 km mass start race. In the Olympic season 2009/10 he finished 28th in the Tour de Ski 2009/10 and first place in the sprint at the Czech championships.

2010 Winter Olympics

At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , he won the bronze medal with the relay. He also came in 18th place over 15 km freestyle and in sixth place together with Dušan Kožíšek in the team sprint. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo in 2011 , he finished 51st in the skiathlon, 23rd in the 50 km mass start race and in the sprint and eighth in the sprint.

From the 2011/12 season until his last active season 2013/14 he started in the Marathon Cup for the Skinfit Racing Team . He won the Finlandia-hiihto classic over 50 km in 2012 and came third in the Transjurassienne . In 2014 he came second in the Dolomitenlauf . He achieved seventh place in the overall ranking of the Marathon Cup in the 2011/12 season and third place in the 2013/14 season . Also in his last active season he won the Slavic Cup in Horni Misecky over 15 km freestyle and came in second place over 10 km classic. With that he finished seventh overall.
