Career

Marcus Hellner lives in Gällivare and started for the local association Gellivare skidallians . He gained his first international experience in junior and FIS races . In 2004 he appeared in Stryn for the first time, but without any significant results, at the Junior World Championships. In the following years he mainly ran junior races, later also FIS and U23 races, in some cases he reached very good positions, but without assuming a decisive role in the competitions. At the end of the 2005/06 season he was allowed to compete in the World Cup for the first time after good placements in FIS races in Borlänge . He finished 32nd in the sprint. He celebrated his first major success as fifth in the sprint race in the first Tour de Ski in 2006/2007 . The nomination for the Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 in Sapporo brought him further good placements . Here it was used over the 15-kilometer route, which is rather unusual for the sprinter, and came in ninth.

At the beginning of the 2007/08 season he achieved his first podium finish in the World Cup together with Emil Jönsson in the team world cup race in Düsseldorf . A year later he won his first World Cup victory in front of his home crowd at the opening race of the 2008/09 season in Gällivare over the distance of 15 kilometers freestyle. At the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver , he won the gold medal in the 30 km skiathlon and with the relay. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo in 2011 he won his first world title in the sprint and was able to win silver in the 4x10 km relay behind Norway. He ended the 2010/11 season with a 29th place at the Sprint World Cup in Stockholm .

At the beginning of the 2011/12 season , after finishing ninth in the individual in Sjusjøen on the same route , he was able to reach the podium again as third in the relay. A short time later, however, there were no good placements again in Kuusamo . After winning the FIS 15 km race in Gällivare at the beginning of December 2011 , he finished fourth in Davos a week later and for the first time in the World Cup again achieved a top position since the World Championship in Oslo. Hellner was also able to convince at the Tour de Ski 2011/2012 , which he finished second overall after good individual results.

At the Swedish Championships in 2012 in Östersund , he won the titles in the individual over 15 km and in the skiathlon over 30 km. A short time later he was in Nové Město na Moravě with the relay as third again on the podium. In the individual disciplines, top placements were rahr. At the end of the season in Falun he was ninth again. Despite a lack of victories, he finished fourth in the overall World Cup ranking of the 2011/12 season .

Hellner started the 2012/13 season with a third place at the Individual World Cup in Gällivare. Just one day later, he was also second with the season. The team won this placement again in January in La Clusaz , after Hellner had previously finished fifth in the 2012/2013 Tour de Ski . Only three days later he defended his Swedish championship in skiathlon at the National Championships in Falun.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2013 in Val di Fiemme , he won the silver medal in the team sprint after finishing eighth in the skiathlon. He also won silver with the team in the 4 × 10 km relay competition. In the World Cup, after the World Cup, he was only able to place himself in the midfield with rather poor performance and was only ninth in the overall World Cup ranking. At the beginning of the 2013/14 season he took seventh place at the Nordic Opening in Kuusamo . In January 2014 he became Swedish champion over 15 km and in the skiathlon. At the World Cup race in Toblach he achieved third place over 15 km classic. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , he won silver in the skiathlon and gold in the relay. He finished the Tour de Ski 2015 in 11th place overall. In February 2015 he came third in the 15 km freestyle in Östersund . At the end of January 2016 he became Swedish champion in skiathlon and second in the 15 km classic. At the Ski Tour Canada 2016, he finished tenth. He took third place over 15 km freestyle in Canmore and ran the third fastest time in the pursuit stage in Québec . At the beginning of April 2016 he became Swedish champion over 50 km.
