Career

Vittoz made his international debut at the Junior World Championships in 1995 in Breitenwang . After he reached places 19 and 20 there, he started in the Continental Cup after the Junior World Championship . Until the end of February he was in the points in all races. He also succeeded in doing this in Seefeld in Tirol in January 1995. At the following Junior World Championships in 1995 in Gällivare , Sweden , he ran in sixth over 10 km for the first time in the top 10. Over the 30 km he finished the race in 24th place. After further Continental Cups, in which he was able to improve further and finish fifth in Furtwangen in the Black Forest , he was used for the first time in the Cross-Country World Cup on January 13, 1996 . In Nové Město na Moravě Vittoz ran 22nd to his first World Cup points. In the sprint in Reit im Winkl , he secured his first top 20 placement in 17th place. After not finishing in the points in Lahti and Falun , he finished the season in Toblach in the Continental Cup and finished second to his first podium.

For the 1996/97 season Vittoz was again part of the World Cup squad. He collected his first season points as 13th in Brusson . In Furtwangen he celebrated another podium finish as second in the Continental Cup. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Trondheim in 1997 , he ran the 30 km in free style on a good 16th place. Over 10 km he ran in 28th place and also held this position in the pursuit. As a sports soldier, he was also part of the French team at the 1997 Military World Ski Championships in Val Cartier and finished sixth after 15 km in free technique. Although Vittoz started the following season 1997/98 only weakly and only convinced in the sprint in Milan as 18th, he got a starting place at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano . Only in the pursuit did the Frenchman finish 19th in the top 20.

On January 9, 1999 Vittoz succeeded in ninth in Nové Město na Moravě for the first time a top 10 result in the World Cup. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1999 in Ramsau am Dachstein , he only started in the 10 km individual race and finished in 45th place. In March Vittoz secured his first Continental Cup victory in Lillehammer . In December 1999 he was again among the top ten in the sprint in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . He also clearly succeeded in this at the race in Trondheim in February . In March he narrowly missed his first World Cup podium at the Pursuit World Cup in Bormio, finishing fourth. He finally celebrated this as second in Santa Caterina . A week later, he was again on the podium in third place in Brusson. For the time being, they were the only ones in the World Cup.

At the 2001 Military World Cup in the United States, he won the silver medal over 15 km behind Egil Kristiansen . At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2001 in Lahti , Vittoz again only managed a top 20 place as 19th in the pursuit. A year later at his second Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002 , he was still unable to win a medal. However, it was used for the first time in the French relay team, which finished eighth after 4 × 10 km.

On November 23, 2002, Vittoz celebrated his first World Cup victory over 10 km in Kiruna . He also showed a good performance in Davos and finished second on the podium. However, he was unable to build on this performance in the following weeks. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2003 in Val di Fiemme , he was again without a medal. After he had to end the mass start race over 30 km early, Vittoz crossed the finish line in 28th place in the skiathlon. In the relay race he finished 11th with the team before he finished sixth in the final 50 km individual.

At the beginning of the 2003/04 season he celebrated another podium with third place in Toblach. On February 7, 2004, he won the La Clusaz relay world cup together with Alexandre Rousselet , Christophe Perrillat and Emmanuel Jonnier . After he was again on the podium in the pursuit and with the relay in Lago di Tesero as third, he won the 30 km from Ramsau am Dachstein .

After his fourth World Cup victory a little later in Nové Město na Moravě on January 15, 2005, he was briefly suspected of doping in early February . His A sample was tested positive for furosemide , a diuretic , by a Cologne laboratory . Furosemide, which itself has no performance-enhancing effect, is used as a masking agent due to its dehydrating effect . However, the examination of the B sample turned out negative. Since a second analysis in the Cologne laboratory again came to a different result, a DNA analysis was carried out, which could rule out manipulation with foreign urine. A few days later Vittoz was acquitted of all allegations but morally damaged but was able to take part in the 2005 World Championships in Oberstdorf , where he won gold in the 30 km pursuit race on February 20, 2005. In March he narrowly missed another World Cup podium with fourth place in Falun , but in the end was able to confidently achieve second place in the overall World Cup.

In the 2005/06 season Vittoz tackled the overall World Cup again and convinced with good top 10 placements at the beginning of the season and another victory in Nové Město na Moravě. After another third place in Davos, Vittoz traveled as one of the medal favorites to the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin . However , he again missed an Olympic medal on the trails around Pragelato . Even with the strong relay he passed the medals and finished fourth. After the games only reached a top 10 place in an individual World Cup, he finished the season in fifth place overall. Only in the overall distance World Cup did he defend his second place from the previous year. The following winter he took part in the Tour de Ski for the first time and achieved victory in the pursuit stage of Oberstdorf. At the end of the tour, he finished 19th overall. At the beginning of February he celebrated another World Cup victory in Davos on his parade route 15 km. In March Vittoz won the 15 km title at the 2007 Military World Ski Championships in Võru ahead of compatriot Emmanuel Jonnier . Previously, he had remained without a medal at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Sapporo . He finished the World Cup season a little later in sixth place overall. In the discipline world cup he was again second.

Only at the end of the season did he celebrate his seventh and final World Cup victory by winning the World Cup final on March 16, 2008 in Bormio. At the 2008 Military World Ski Championships in Hochfilzen , he confidently defended his title over the 15 km from the previous year. In 2008 he won the 42 km freestyle at the Marathon de Bessans .

At the 2009 World Cup final in Falun , Vittoz was once again able to prove his good mileage and finished second. He was also on the podium again in Beitostølen in second place. In 2009 he won the 42 km freestyle at La Foulée Blanche . He got into the 2009/10 season with difficulty, but was able to ride in the 2009/10 Tour de Ski again in 18th place overall.
