René Prêtre (2012)

René Prêtre (born January 30, 1957 in Boncourt ) is a Swiss cardiac surgeon and pediatrician. He was Swiss of the year 2009.

Life

Prêtre grew up with six siblings on a farm in Boncourt. He studied medicine at the University of Geneva . After graduation, he moved to New York, where he operated on victims of violent crime and accidents. He worked in clinics in England, Germany and France. From 2001 to the end of June 2012, Prêtre was chief physician for pediatric cardiac surgery at the Children's Hospital Zurich , and from 2004 to the end of July 2012, Professor at the University of Zurich . He was succeeded by Michael Hübler . Since August 2012, he is a professor and clinical director of cardiac and vascular surgery for adults and children at the University Hospital of Lausanne and professor at the University of Lausanne .

In 2007 he founded the “Le petit cœur” foundation, which operates in Mozambique . Once a year he flies with his team to Maputo for two weeks to operate on children and adolescents who would have no chance of survival without this mission.

Prêtre is divorced and has two daughters with his ex-wife.

Awards

In January 2010 René Prêtre was voted Swiss of the year 2009. At the same time, he was honored with the “SwissAward 2009 - Society category” at the “Swiss Award” television gala for his tireless work on the hearts of the youngest as one of the most renowned surgeons in Switzerland.
