Rolf Maibach

Rolf Maibach (born April 3, 1943 in Aarau ) is a Swiss pediatrician . In 2010 he was voted Swiss of the year together with Marianne Kaufmann .

life and work

Rolf Maibach studied medicine at the University of Zurich . After graduating, he continued his education in surgery and paediatrics, primarily at the Children's Hospital in Zurich . From August 1977 to July 2006 he was head of the children's department at the Surselva regional hospital in Ilanz . He was the first pediatrician to run an independent pediatric practice there.

Since 1996 he and his wife Raphaela have been working as a pediatrician at the Hôpital Albert Schweitzer Haiti (HAS) for one month every year . In early October 2006 he and his wife definitely moved to Haiti . She headed the hospital laboratory, he first worked as a pediatrician and from February 2008 to August 2010 as the hospital's medical director. Maibach has been a board member of the hospital since 2000 and evaluates projects and programs several times a year.

In the summer of 1997, Maibach and his wife Raphaela founded the  Graubünden partnership Hôpital Albert Schweitzer Haiti  (BPHASH) to provide non-material, personal and material support to the hospital. BPHASH has been the most important operational and financial partner of the HAS since the end of 2009. In addition to many projects for trauma surgery and social services for particularly needy patients, BPHASH finances and controls the children's clinic, by far the largest department in the hospital. In May 2015, BPHASH was renamed the Swiss partnership HAS Haiti (SPHASH) www.hopitalalbertschweitzer.org. The extensive conversion of electricity production from diesel generators to solar energy with a solar project is one of the most important measures of SPHASH. 

The Hôpital Albert Schweitzer Haiti became known in Switzerland and internationally for the treatment of over 1200 victims of the earthquake in Haiti in 2010 , the flood disasters in autumn 2008 and two severe cholera epidemics in 2010 and 2011, when thousands of sick and injured people were insured HAS were brought.

There is little time left for Maibach's hobby, astronomy . In 2006 Maibach and friends supported the construction of the Mirasteilas observatory in Falera with the largest publicly accessible telescope in Switzerland.

Rolf Maibach is married to Raphaela Maibach-Simeon and has four grown children.
